The Environmental Accounts Landscape is a compendium of environmental accounting models and examples of their implementation.

The latest publication of the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) 2012, Experimental Ecosystem Accounting is now available. The SEEA provides pathways to accounting for ecosystems, particularly in non-monetary (physical) terms. This enables accounting for ecosystems from an entirely environmental perspective and for a range of non-monetary values.

A synthesis of remote sensing capabilities for the Murray–Darling Basin Authority provides an independent and critical appraisal of the current and future potential of remote sensing and related capabilities to contribute to the key business and information needs of the Murray–Darling Basin Authority.

The National Plan for Environmental Information initiative

Photo of a male Splendid Fairy-wren: Photograph by David KleinertThe National Plan for Environmental Information (NPEI) initiative is an Australian Government program to improve the quality and accessibility of environmental information. It is jointly led by the Bureau of Meteorology and the Department of the Environment, with the Bureau responsible for its operational components.

From an operational perspective, the initiative is structured around the following key activities:
  • Coordination
  • National Environmental Information Infrastructure
  • Products and services
  • Environmental accounts.

Delivering the next generation of earth observation information

Geoscience Australia (GA) is working with the National Computational Infrastructure facility at the Australian National University on the next generation of earth observation products and services.

Using the power of the National Computational Infrastructure, GA has processed over 133,000 Landsat 5 and Landsat 7 scenes covering the Australian continent from 1998 to 2012. Access to this data is available through the GA Discovery and Delivery System.

Addressing challenges in biodiversity management

Image of an Armoured Mist Frog (Litoria lorica). Image: Robert Puschendorf (JCU)The National Environmental Research Program provides around $20 million each year for environmental research to improve understanding and management of Australia's biodiversity and ecosystems.

The program engages Australian research institutions and other collaborators to address priority research needs of government and other key end-users. Research includes understanding how ecosystems function, monitoring ecosystem health, maintaining and building ecosystem resilience and sustainability, and exploring market-based instruments to protect biodiversity.

Biodiversity profiling

Front cover of Biodiversity profiling: Components of a continental biodiversity information capability reportUnder the auspices of the National Plan for Environmental Information initiative, the Bureau of Meteorology, the Atlas of Living Australia and CSIRO Ecosystem Sciences have undertaken a collaborative study to explore the requirements for developing a national biodiversity monitoring capability.

The ability to describe changes in biodiversity through time and across space is critical for supporting various forms of environmental assessment, monitoring and reporting. Yet historically there has been a lack of consistent biodiversity information for the Australian continent.

A new decision-making tool for agriculture

Australian agriculture is exposed to considerable risks associated with climate and market variability. However, the information required for effective risk and resource management is often not readily accessible at appropriate spatial and time scales. At the same time, there is an increasing need for more region-specific information on climatic conditions, production, agricultural markets and land management practice trends.
